Princess Diana's BaZi Chart Has No Water. That Depends on One Detail.

BaZi Desk · 11 min read · Updated 2026-10-29

Diana, Princess of Wales, has one of the best-documented birth times of any public figure of the twentieth century: 1 July 1961, 19:45, at Sandringham. In astrological data collection that earns an AA rating — the highest grade, meaning the time comes from a birth record rather than a recollection or a guess.

This matters because it lets us do something we could not do with a lower-rated chart: read the structure without hedging every sentence. It also lets us demonstrate the limits of that confidence, because even an AA rating does not make a chart's conclusions permanent. Two hours earlier or later and the most striking feature of this chart disappears.

That feature is simple: there is no Water in it at all.

A note on scope before we begin. Diana died in 1997. This article does not analyse her death, her marriage, or her family in any interpretive way. It reads a birth chart as a structure, in the same way one might read a building's floor plan. Anything that treats a real person's suffering as evidence for a system is not analysis — it is exploitation, and we are not doing it.

The chart

YearMonthDayHour
Stem辛 Xin (Yin Metal)甲 Jia (Yang Wood)乙 Yi (Yin Wood)丙 Bing (Yang Fire)
Branch丑 Chou (Ox)午 Wu (Horse)未 Wei (Goat)戌 Xu (Dog)
ElementMetal / EarthWood / FireWood / EarthFire / Earth
Ten GodSeven KillingsRob Wealth(Day Master)Hurting Officer

The Day Master is 乙 Yi — Yin Wood, and it is weak by the standard scoring used here (it loses on the month branch, which is the heaviest factor).

Elemental distribution across the four stems and four branch main-qi:

WoodFireEarthMetalWater
2 (25%)2 (25%)3 (37.5%)1 (12.5%)0 (0%)

Earth leads numerically, but that count is misleading on its own, and we will come back to why.

The chart also carries three structural relations worth naming:

Which conclusion is load-bearing

Here is the same birth date calculated at four plausible times. Read the first three columns across — they never move.

Birth timeHour pillarWoodFireEarthMetalWater
17:30 (You hour)乙酉31220
19:45 (Xu hour)丙戌22310
21:30 (Hai hour)丁亥22211
23:30 (next day)戊子12221

The Year, Month and Day pillars — 辛丑, 甲午, 乙未 — are identical in every row. So these conclusions hold no matter what:

Now look at the Water column. At 19:45 it reads 0. At 21:30 — two hours later — it reads 1, and the "no Water" reading evaporates completely.

Almost everything interesting about this chart flows from the absence of Water. The dryness, the lack of a cooling mechanism, the missing Resource element. And all of it is contingent on a specific evening hour on 1 July 1961.

An AA rating means we have good reason to believe 19:45 is right. It does not mean the inference built on top of 19:45 is stronger than 19:45 itself. Those are two different kinds of certainty, and conflating them is how chart readings turn into fiction.

乙 Yi Wood: a vine, not a tree

The first distinction a Chinese reader makes among Wood Day Masters is 甲 versus 乙, and it is not a difference of degree.

甲 is a tree. Trunk, height, structure, load-bearing capacity. A tree holds its position by being rigid and rooted. It resists wind by not bending.

乙 is a vine. A creeper, a blade of grass, a climbing plant. It survives by flexibility — bending around obstacles, growing toward whatever it can attach to, and returning after being pressed down. A vine that tries to stand rigidly snaps.

Classical texts describe 乙木 as 藤萝系甲 — "the vine that binds itself to the tree." A Yi Wood chart with strong Jia Wood nearby is considered well-supported, because the vine has something to climb. A Yi Wood chart without it has to find its own support.

This chart has 甲 on the month stem — Yang Wood, directly adjacent to the Day Master. In Ten Gods terms that is 劫财 Rob Wealth: same element, opposite polarity. So there is a support structure, and it is on the most prominent position in the chart after the Day pillar itself.

Rob Wealth is one of the more ambiguous stars in the system, and worth stating precisely. It gives the Day Master strength — a second Wood to lean on — but it also represents a peer who competes for the same resources. The same character that supports you also divides what you have. Classically, Rob Wealth is a chart that says: you will not do this alone, and you will not have it entirely to yourself.

Born in the Wu month: the vine in high summer

午 Wu is the Horse month — the peak of Fire, midsummer, the point where Yang energy is fullest and about to turn. In the seasonal cycle, Wu is where Fire is strongest and Water is at its lowest before winter returns.

So this is a vine growing in the driest part of the year.

The classical remedy for Yi Wood in summer is 癸水 — Yin Water, used to moisten the root. Not a flood, not a river: a fine, steady moisture. Summers kill vines by drying them out, not by drowning them.

This chart has zero Water. Not hidden, not weak — absent from all eight characters.

That is the central fact of the chart, and it means the whole structure is 燥 (dry) in a way that nothing else in the chart can correct. There is no self-regulating mechanism. Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water — but on this chart the chain has no Water at the end of it. The cycle is broken at exactly the point where relief would come from.

What "no Water" actually means

Water is the Resource element for a Wood Day Master — 水生木, Water feeds Wood. In Ten Gods: 正印 / 偏印, Proper and Indirect Seal.

Resource covers: nurture, instruction, protection, credentials, institutional backing, the mother, and generally anything that arrives as support rather than being earned. It is the element of being sustained.

A Wood chart with no Water has no Resource on the surface. The honest reading is narrow and specific:

And here is the part most write-ups skip: Resource is also the element of rest. In classical usage, 印 is what allows a chart to recover — sleep, retreat, being cared for, receiving rather than producing. A chart with strong Resource can absorb pressure. A chart with none has to metabolise everything in real time.

Read structurally, with no claim about the person: a flexible, climbing structure, in the driest possible season, with no built-in supply of moisture and no layer between it and whatever cuts.

That is what the chart says. What it was like to live inside is not something a diagram can tell you.

Metal on the Year pillar

The Year stem is 辛 Xin — Yin Metal, which for a Yi Wood Day Master is 七殺 Seven Killings.

Seven Killings is the most forceful of the Authority stars. Proper Officer (正官) is rule by agreement — structure you accept. Seven Killings is rule by pressure — structure imposed on you, discipline that does not ask first. It is the star of the commander, the enforcer, the thing that requires you to perform under threat.

Its position matters as much as its identity. The Year pillar governs ancestry, origin, and the inherited environment — the conditions you are born into rather than the ones you choose.

Read carefully, the statement is: a chart where the most imposing form of external authority sits in the position of origin. Metal cutting Wood, located at the root.

Note also the polarity relationship. 辛 is Yin Metal, 乙 is Yin Wood — same polarity, which is what makes it Seven Killings rather than Proper Officer. In this system, same-polarity Authority is read as harsher: it does not negotiate.

There is a genuine structural tension here and it is worth naming plainly: the chart is a vine that survives by bending, with a blade positioned at its origin. That is not a prediction. It is a description of geometry, and geometry is what this system is actually good at.

伤官 on the Hour pillar

The Hour stem is 丙 Bing — Yang Fire, which for Yi Wood is 伤官 Hurting Officer.

Hurting Officer is the output star that refuses convention: expression, performance, irreverence, the impulse to say the thing that is not supposed to be said. It is the loudest of the Output stars and the one most associated with public visibility.

The Hour pillar governs the later part of life, and classically children and legacy. So the chart places its most expressive element at the far end of the timeline — and in the most exposed position, on a stem.

But note what 丙 does to 乙 mechanically: Fire drains Wood. Output is not free. Every unit of expression is consumed from the Day Master's own substance. In a chart that is already weak, in the driest month of the year, with no Water to replenish it, the Output channel is simultaneously the most visible feature and the most expensive one.

This is a pattern worth understanding because it appears in a great many creative charts: strong Output, weak Resource, no cooling. The structure produces relentlessly and has no built-in way to recover. Whether that describes a person is not something we can assert. That it describes a configuration is straightforward.

The clash at the axis

丑未冲 — the Year branch and the Day branch are in direct clash.

Chou and Wei are both Earth storage branches, and in the six-clash system they oppose each other directly. The Year pillar is origin; the Day pillar is self. A clash along that axis is read as a structural pull between the conditions you came from and the thing you are.

The chart also has 午戌半合火, which combines the Month and Hour branches into a half Fire frame — strengthening Fire, which in a dry summer chart means strengthening the dryness.

And 甲午 / 乙未 links the Month stem to the Day pillar, which is what makes the Rob Wealth support in the previous section more than incidental: the Jia Wood is not just present, it is bound to the Day Master.

Put together: a weak vine, bound to a tree, in a drought, held at the root by a blade, producing at full volume at the far end of the chart, with its origin and its self pulling in opposite directions. Every one of those statements is a statement about structure. None of them is a statement about fate.

What this reading cannot do

It cannot predict. Everything above is description. Description mapped backwards onto a known life always looks impressive — that is a property of hindsight, not of the system.

It cannot survive a wrong birth time. Specifically: the "no Water" reading, which drives most of this article, fails at 21:30. It also fails at 23:30, where the Day pillar itself changes to 丙申 and the Day Master stops being Yi Wood at all. The AA rating is what licenses the reading, and the rating is not the same thing as a proof.

It cannot tell you about a person's inner life. A chart describes configuration. It does not describe experience, and any reading that claims otherwise has left the system and started inventing.

It cannot separate a person from a public image. What is publicly known about Diana is a curated narrative, not a life. Reading a chart against that narrative is reading it against a story.

The chart in one paragraph

Yin Wood, the vine: flexible, climbing, surviving by bending. Born in the Fire month at the peak of summer, in a chart with no Water at all — no Resource, no cooling, no protective layer between the vine and the Metal that cuts it. Bound to a Yang Wood companion on the month stem that gives strength and also competes. Seven Killings sitting at the position of origin. Hurting Officer producing at full volume in the final pillar, spending the Day Master's own substance to do it. Dry, exposed, supported only laterally, and structurally unable to rest.

If you want to know which of those statements would survive if the clock were wrong, that is a different question — and it is the one worth asking first.
