Bruce Lee's BaZi Chart: Hurting Officer Against Seven Killings
Bruce Lee is the single most cited worked example in classical Four Pillars literature. Not because he was famous, but because his birth data is unusually solid, his life events are precisely dated, and the chart's structure is legible without any interpretive contortion. If you wanted one chart to teach the system with, you would pick this one.
It is also, for that exact reason, a good test of whether a reading is honest. A chart this clean makes it easy to look brilliant and easy to overreach. We are going to do the first and avoid the second.
Scope: Lee died in 1973, at 32. This article does not analyse his death. Several published readings of this chart do — they work backwards from July 1973 and find the clash that "explains" it. That is the single most common failure mode in this entire field, and we are not repeating it. A system that can be fitted to any outcome after the fact has not predicted anything. It has narrated.
The birth data
27 November 1940, 07:12, San Francisco. Born in the Chinese Hospital in Chinatown, to Cantonese parents who were touring with an opera company. The hour comes from hospital records, which in astrological data collection earns an AA rating — the top grade.
One technical note, because it matters for this chart specifically. San Francisco in November 1940 was on Pacific Standard Time, and 07:12 local clock time converts to roughly 07:02 true solar time — a ten-minute correction that does not cross a branch boundary. The hour is 辰 Chen either way: 07:00 to 09:00. So unlike many AA-rated charts, this one has margin. The reading does not sit on a knife edge.
The chart
| Year | Month | Day | Hour | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stem | 庚 Geng (Yang Metal) | 丁 Ding (Yin Fire) | 甲 Jia (Yang Wood) | 戊 Wu (Yang Earth) |
| Branch | 辰 Chen (Dragon) | 亥 Hai (Pig) | 戌 Xu (Dog) | 辰 Chen (Dragon) |
| Element | Metal / Earth | Fire / Water | Wood / Earth | Earth / Earth |
| Ten God | Seven Killings | Hurting Officer | (Day Master) | Indirect Wealth |
The Day Master is 甲 Jia — Yang Wood, and it scores as strong.
Elemental distribution:
| Wood | Fire | Earth | Metal | Water |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (12.5%) | 1 (12.5%) | 4 (50%) | 1 (12.5%) | 1 (12.5%) |
Earth is half the chart. That is the number that shapes everything else, and it is worth pausing on. In a chart where four of the eight units are Earth, the Day Master's relationship to Earth is the main event.
The chart carries two structural relations:
- 辰戌冲 between the Year branch and the Day branch.
- 辰戌冲 again between the Day branch and the Hour branch.
Two separate clashes along the same axis, with the Day pillar in the middle of both. There is also a 辰辰 half-combination linking the Year and Hour branches toward Water.
Three of the four branches are Earth storage branches — Chen, Xu, Chen. This is a chart built almost entirely out of vaults.
Which conclusion is load-bearing
This is the part most celebrity readings skip. Here is the same date across six plausible hours:
| Birth time | Hour pillar | Wood | Fire | Earth | Metal | Water |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 05:30 (Mao hour) | 丁卯 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 1 |
| 07:12 (Chen hour) | 戊辰 | 1 | 1 | 4 | 1 | 1 |
| 09:30 (Si hour) | 己巳 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 1 | 1 |
| 11:30 (Wu hour) | 庚午 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| 15:30 (Shen hour) | 壬申 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| 19:30 (Xu hour) | 甲戌 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 1 | 1 |
Read the first three pillars down the columns: 庚辰, 丁亥, 甲戌 never move. So these conclusions are certain:
- Jia Wood Day Master — certain.
- Born in the Hai month — certain. Early winter, Water at strength.
- Strong Day Master — certain across every hour tested.
- No element is entirely absent — certain. Every hour keeps all five elements present. This chart is complete in a way most charts are not.
What is not certain:
- "Earth is half the chart" is specific to the Chen hour. At 05:30 it drops to 2 of 8. The single most striking number in this chart exists because he was born between 7 and 9 in the morning.
- The doubled 辰戌 clash — the Year-Day clash is fixed, but the Day-Hour clash requires a Chen or Xu hour.
Notice what this means. The interpretation of this chart in the literature leans heavily on Earth being half of it. That reading depends on the hour. It happens to be well-attested. It is still an inference stacked on top of an hour, and it is worth knowing which is which.
甲 Jia Wood: the tree
Where Yi Wood is a vine that bends, Jia is the tree — trunk, height, load-bearing structure, the thing that stays standing because it is rigid.
Classical texts describe 甲木 as 参天大树 — the tree that reaches the sky. The image is not decorative. It defines how the chart handles pressure: a Jia Day Master does not evade a blow, it absorbs it and keeps its shape. The failure mode is breaking rather than bending.
Born in 亥 Hai — the Pig month, the first month of winter. Hai is the peak of Yin Water and the storage position of Wood. For a Jia tree, this is the best possible month: Water generates Wood, and there is a great deal of it. The tree is standing in deep water in the cold season.
That is why the chart scores strong. Not because of support from Fire or Earth, but because the month is feeding it directly.
Four Earth out of Eight: wealth at scale
For a Wood Day Master, Earth is Wealth — 木克土, Wood controls Earth. In Ten Gods: 正财 Proper Wealth (opposite polarity) and 偏财 Indirect Wealth (same polarity).
Four Earth units is 50% of the chart. Whatever else this configuration means, it means Wealth is the dominant element in the structure.
There is a mechanical consequence that classical texts are emphatic about, and it is easy to state: a strong Day Master can carry Wealth; a weak one cannot. Wealth is what the Day Master controls. If the Day Master has no strength, the thing it is supposed to control ends up controlling it.
Here the Day Master is strong — fed by the winter Water month — and the Wealth is enormous. That combination is the classical picture of capacity: the ability to hold something large without being crushed by it.
And note where the Wealth sits. Two of the four Earth units are Chen and Xu — both storage branches (土库). In this system, storage branches are where an element is kept rather than spent. And both of them are being clashed.
辰戌冲: the vaults are open
This is the structural centre of the chart.
辰 and 戌 are both Earth storage vaults, and they clash directly. Chen stores Water and Wood; Xu stores Fire and Metal. When Chen and Xu clash, the vaults open — what was sealed inside becomes active.
This chart has two of those clashes, with the Day pillar standing between them. The Day pillar is the self. So the structure reads: the self positioned between two opening vaults.
For a chart whose Wealth is locked inside storage branches, a clash is not damage — it is release. The classic formulation is 冲开财库, "the clash opens the wealth storehouse." You cannot get at what is inside a vault without breaking the seal.
That is a real distinction in this system and it is often missed. Not every clash is destructive. A clash between two storage branches of the same element is a different animal from a clash between two active branches. One releases, the other disrupts.
The classical texts on this specific chart tend to dwell on the destructive reading, because it is the one that "explains" how he died. That is backwards reasoning. The structural fact is that this is a chart with three vaults, two of them clashing, and the Day Master in the middle.
伤官驾杀: the pattern this chart is famous for
Now the part that makes Bruce Lee's chart a teaching case rather than just an interesting one.
Look at the two most visible stems. The Year stem is 庚 — Yang Metal, which for a Jia Wood Day Master is 七殺 Seven Killings. Metal chops Wood. This is the most direct form of Authority: not rule by agreement, but pressure that does not ask. It sits in the position of origin.
The Month stem is 丁 — Yin Fire, which for Jia Wood is 伤官 Hurting Officer. Fire is Output for Wood. Hurting Officer is the abrasive version: expression that refuses convention, the impulse to break the form rather than master it.
And then the mechanic that gives the pattern its name: Fire controls Metal. 火克金.
So the chart contains a stem (丁) whose function is to control the stem (庚) that would otherwise destroy the Day Master. The Output star is not just expressing — it is restraining the thing that threatens the Day Master.
This is 伤官驾杀 (shang guan jia sha) — "Hurting Officer driving Seven Killings" — and it is one of the most discussed configurations in classical Chinese astrology. The standard reading is not mystical. It is structural:
- Seven Killings alone is raw pressure. Handled badly it produces a person who is dominated, or who dominates others.
- Hurting Officer alone is raw talent. Handled badly it produces someone who breaks rules for the sake of breaking them and cannot build anything durable.
- Together, with the Output controlling the Authority, you get talent directed at structure: the unconventional approach applied to a field that has rules, producing a breakthrough the conventional approach could not.
The classical phrase for the outcome is 以才制权 — using ability to check power. The chart does not produce a rebel or a bureaucrat. It produces someone whose method is to break the form and then rebuild it better.
There is one more condition, and it is what separates this chart from a chart that merely has the stars. For 伤官驾杀 to work, the Day Master must be strong enough to support the Output. Output drains the Day Master. If the Day Master is weak, the Hurting Officer cannot do its job — it just exhausts the person producing it.
This Day Master is strong. That is the whole reason the pattern functions.
So the full structural chain reads:
Strong Jia Wood, fed by a winter Water month → can afford to produce Output → 丁 Fire on the month stem produces and controls → 庚 Metal Seven Killings on the year stem is restrained rather than allowed to cut → and the result sits in a chart where four units of Wealth are stored in three vaults, two of which are open.
Every link in that chain is a mechanical relationship in the system. None of it requires a leap.
The hour: Earth on Earth
At 07:12 the hour pillar is 戊辰 — Yang Earth on a Dragon, which is another Earth storage branch.
For a Jia Wood Day Master, 戊 is 偏财 Indirect Wealth — same polarity Wealth, the "windfall" version: opportunity, expansion, resources that arrive through movement rather than accumulation. And it sits on Chen, which stores Water and Wood.
So the Hour pillar adds a fourth Earth and opens a third vault, at the position that governs the later part of life.
I want to be careful here, because this is exactly where readings start sliding into narrative. The structural statement is: the Hour pillar repeats the Year pillar's branch and adds a second Wealth stem, at the far end of the chart. The narrative statement — that this means late-life success, or legacy, or children — is interpretation, and it is where the system's confidence should drop.
What we can say without overreach: the chart's Earth concentration is heaviest at the two ends of the timeline, and both ends are storage branches. What was stored is what gets released.
What this reading cannot do
It cannot explain his death, and we will not try. Several published readings of this chart work backwards from July 1973 — the year 癸丑, the month 己未, completing a 丑戌未 Earth penalty with his natal 戌. The mechanics are internally consistent. That is the problem. The same mechanics can be assembled for thousands of dates, and only the ones that coincide with a known event get published. This is a filing cabinet of confirmations, not a prediction.
It cannot tell you what 伤官驾杀 was like to live inside. The pattern describes a method. It does not describe a person's experience of using it, and no chart will.
It cannot be read without knowing which claims are hour-dependent. Earth at 50% — the number this entire reading leans on — requires the Chen hour. It is well-attested, but it is not free.
It cannot separate the chart from the legend. What the world knows about Bruce Lee is a constructed public image, sustained by films and by an early death. Reading a chart against that image is reading it against a story someone else wrote.
The chart in one paragraph
Yang Wood, the tree: rigid, load-bearing, standing in deep winter water in the month that feeds it best. Strong enough to produce at full volume, and producing through 丁 Fire — Hurting Officer on the most public stem — which in turn restrains 庚 Metal, Seven Killings, sitting at the position of origin. Four units of Wealth, half the chart, locked inside three Earth vaults, two of which are being clashed open with the self standing between them. A complete chart — no element missing — with its pressure and its release both built into the same structure, and its most quoted number depending on a birth between seven and nine in the morning.
That is what the characters say. Whether they describe a man is a question the system cannot answer, and pretending otherwise is how this field loses its credibility.
